For my response to the typeface ‘Fashion Loves Art’ I have done four examples to show the lettering using various mixed medias which I have been inspired by the period of the 1990s. I started by exploring illustrations which represent the 1990s including objects, music and signs saying ‘I love the 90s’. I firstly responded to the sign ‘I love the 90s’ using graphic pens. I slightly changed the sign as I wanted a black background instead of white as I want the letters to stand out boldly. The shapes of each letter remind us of the 1970s, especially the love heart which has replaced the letter ‘O’ from ‘Love’. After analysing the example, it represented the 70s than it did the 80s. I then went to look onto the typeface ‘grunde’ which reflected massively on the 1990s. In the 1990s I found that music was very popular, to respond to the music using a white background, I used CDs and CD Cover to spell out the lettering as It relates to the topic in replacement to music. Also following from the idea of music, artists/celebrities were very popular and icons to the population when seeing them on television. On a white background with light hitting in from all directions, I carved out as example of the first few letters ‘fash’ using tape. For my last example on the 1990s I wanted to search an object which our generation knows and can buy in shops today. I collect the Bubble Tape ‘Hubba Bubba’. When responding to this object I bought this brand from the local supermarket, to demonstrate typeface ‘Fashion Loves art’. I carefully created a sequence of pattern using the typeface ‘Fashion Loves Art’ which looks eye catching.

Throughout my examples I have focused on found images that represent the 1990s. In my response to these images I wanted to create a modern typeface using many different materials which relate to each individual image I collected.  The Medias which consisted of objects relating to music and film in that period have much more of an effect than the solid textures such as the graphic pens. I feel that I have produced a collection of materials which follow back to the 1990s, creating texture, many colours and the popularity of the time, music.

                                                                Typography

For our typography design we started by planning ideas of objects in the room that relate to fashion as replacement for each letter. We came up with seven materials to use in the project. Our first idea of the ‘F’ we used our hair to create the straight lines, the contrast of the two hair colours looked vibrant. For the ‘A’ we used three long and thin paintbrushes to represent the art of fashion. Next was the ‘S’ and also the ‘H’ we decided on using a scarf of for the S and different materials for the H which held strong colours, materials in fashion are its main icon. For the ‘I’ we found a skeleton, we took a picture of the higher body including the face which holds the eye in. The ‘O’ we got the response from the camera as in fashion photography is a key object, we used the lense of the camera of the O shape. Lastly for the letter ‘N’ we found plenty of magazines which portray fashion, we placed the six magazines down under black sugar paper and it gives a deep black for the object to reflect off.

We wanted to design a typography using different objects to relate to fashion as it will look different but also gives a meaning for each letter.

Once the photographs had been taken, we placed the images onto the computer to be stitched on Photoshop. Our final design concentrates on the vivid light and dark tones from the flash of the camera, with the objects on the sugar paper.
