For my response to the typeface ‘Fashion Loves Art’ I have
done four examples to show the lettering using various mixed medias which I
have been inspired by the period of the 1990s. I started by exploring
illustrations which represent the 1990s including objects, music and signs
saying ‘I love the 90s’. I firstly responded to the sign ‘I love the 90s’ using
graphic pens. I slightly changed the sign as I wanted a black background
instead of white as I want the letters to stand out boldly. The shapes of each letter
remind us of the 1970s, especially the love heart which has replaced the letter
‘O’ from ‘Love’. After analysing the example, it represented the 70s than it
did the 80s. I then went to look onto the typeface ‘grunde’ which reflected
massively on the 1990s. In the 1990s I found that music was very popular, to
respond to the music using a white background, I used CDs and CD Cover to spell
out the lettering as It relates to the topic in replacement to music. Also
following from the idea of music, artists/celebrities were very popular and
icons to the population when seeing them on television. On a white background
with light hitting in from all directions, I carved out as example of the first
few letters ‘fash’ using tape. For my last example on the 1990s I wanted to
search an object which our generation knows and can buy in shops today. I
collect the Bubble Tape ‘Hubba Bubba’. When responding to this object I bought
this brand from the local supermarket, to demonstrate typeface ‘Fashion Loves
art’. I carefully created a sequence of pattern using the typeface ‘Fashion
Loves Art’ which looks eye catching.
Throughout my examples I have focused on found images that
represent the 1990s. In my response to these images I wanted to create a modern
typeface using many different materials which relate to each individual image I
collected. The Medias which consisted of
objects relating to music and film in that period have much more of an effect
than the solid textures such as the graphic pens. I feel that I have produced a
collection of materials which follow back to the 1990s, creating texture, many
colours and the popularity of the time, music.
